BUDDY READING AT BLACKBUTT STATE SCHOOL
An innovative Buddy Reading Program is under way in Miss Wright’s Year 1 class.
Year 5 students have the opportunity to volunteer 10 minutes of their own time each morning to read with the Year 1 students.
The Buddy Reading Program aims to improve the reading skills of all students taking part, with a strong emphasis on the Year 1s using their new reading strategies such as decoding and comprehension.
Year 5 volunteers also benefit from extra reading every day and the opportunity to improve their own reading strategies.
Under the program, Year 1 students read to the Year 5 students, with the Year 5s reading a chapter of their own books to the Year 1s.
Every time a reading session is completed a special card is punched. Each card has 20 punch holes, the equivalent of 20 rewards Buzz Buttons.
The Buddy Reading Program is a win-win scenario for all students involved as both younger and older students benefit from the extra time each reading session provides.
It’s worked so well that Mrs Williamson has asked all class teachers to consider this as an important reading improvement strategy for next year.
