Our STEM Project

On Thursday 31 August, 18 of our year 5 and 6 students went to Nanango State High School to participate in a STEM challenge with our cluster schools-Nanango State High School, Nanango State School, Cooyar State School, Tanduringie State School and Yarraman State School.

Mr Perrin wrote the following about the event:

Blackbutt students branch out in Year 5/6 STEM Challenge.
Last week, passionate Year 5 and 6 students attended the Cluster STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Derby Racer Challenge at Nanango State High School. These students have spent the past term learning about a range of design and technology skills and design choice. They learned about aero-dynamics, resistance, drag and friction and how to work with these forces to produce an affective CO2 powered drag racer.
18 students attended that event and competed against approximately 200 other students. The day started with a knockout gravity challenge, where students were required to get their racers to cover the longest distance after propelling their cars down a ramp. From this challenge, four Blackbutt students advanced to the finals; Zeth, Michael, Ashlyn and Thomas. With intense competition, our finalists watched on with hopeful eyes as their dragsters flew down the 40m track, some making the journey in under a second! From our finalist, Ashlyn and Thomas advanced to the Top 8, with Thomas advancing to the Top 4.
All of the students conducted themselves professionally and represented Blackbutt tremendously. Many students have already begun planning for next years race.
It was an enjoyable day, full of smiles as well as some nervous looks, as the cars lined up to race. I cannot wait until next years race and the amazing designs it produces.

Please look at the video below and see the way our students enjoyed the day and participates in the event.
