Positive Behaviour to Improve Learning at Blackbutt State School

The first step in facilitating standards of positive behaviour is communicating those standards to all students. At Blackbutt State School we emphasise the importance of directly teaching students the behaviours we want them to demonstrate at school.  Communicating behavioural expectations is a form of universal behaviour support - a strategy directed towards all students designed to prevent problem behaviour and provides a framework for responding to unacceptable behaviour. 
 
The School wide Expectations Teaching Matrix outlines our agreed rules and specific behavioural expectations in all school settings.
 
These expectations from the matrix are communicated to students via a number of strategies, including:
·         Explicit behaviour lessons conducted by classroom teachers;
·         Reinforcement of learning from behaviour lessons on School Parade
·         Saturation in school newsletter and school signage
·         Active supervision by staff during classroom and non-classroom activities.
 
Blackbutt State School implements the following proactive and preventative processes and strategies to support student behaviour:
·         Regular features in the school newsletter, with a particular link to KidsMatter and positive behaviour celebrations, enabling parents to be actively and positively involved in school behaviour expectations.
·KidsMatter team members’ regular provision of information to staff and parents, and support to others in sharing successful practices.
·         Comprehensive induction programs in the Blackbutt State School Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students delivered to new enrolments as well as new and relief staff.
·         Individual support developed for students with high behavioural needs, enabling staff to make the necessary adjustments to support these students consistently across all classroom and non-classroom settings.  
·         Development of specific policies to address:
o    The Use of Personal Technology Devices* at School
o    Procedures for Preventing and Responding to Incidents of Bullying
 
 
At Blackbutt State School, communication of our key messages about behaviour is backed up through reinforcement, which provides students with feedback for engaging in expected school behaviour.  A formal recognition and monitoring system has been developed.   This reinforcement system is designed to increase the quantity and quality of positive interactions between students and staff. All staff members are trained to give consistent and appropriate acknowledgement and rewards. 
 
Expected behaviours are explicitly taught each week in classes and saturated throughout each week on parade, in the newsletter and in duty folders.
Children receive “Buzz Buttons” to reinforce great behaviour at school. These are then tallied and recorded by the admin team at the end of each week and students are able to use these as currency to access a diverse rewards suite.
Positive and Negative behaviours are meticulously tracked and data used to inform strategic directions and behaviour decisions at staff meetings as well as KidsMatter meeting including school wide positive behaviour.
Buzz Buttons
·         Staff members hand Buzz Buttons out each day to students they observe following school rules.  This reinforcement occurs continuously throughout the day.  When they ‘catch’ a student following the rules they can choose to give them a Buzz Button.  The intent is for Buzz Buttons to be handed out freely and frequently. When students are given a Buzz Button they then drop them at their classroom collection point.
·         On one day each week (day varies) we identify a member of staff to be our BB duty officer. They have the task to seek out positive behaviour linked to the weekly focus and hand out a quota of 30 Buzz Buttons on that day. Their Identity is not disclosed to students. 
·         Our community pool staff, crossing supervisors and bus drivers also have the ability to hand out Buzz Buttons for positive behaviour choices.
·         Each week the admin team reviews the submitted buzz buttons and identifies students who have attained milestones in increments of 50.  These students are then acknowledged on parade the following week.
·         Buzz Button tallies are recorded with term, semester and annual progress tracked. Buzz buttons are never removed as a consequence for problem behaviour.
·         Depending on the information identified in the behaviour data, there is the opportunity to hold Buzz Button Bonuses linked to either an individual day, time of day, location or focus. At these bonus times, each Buzz Button is worth double.
·         Gold Buzz Buttons are buttons that are equivalent to 10 individual buzz buttons. These buttons are presented by staff on parade to children who have demonstrated an exceptional act of positive behaviour as identified by staff. Students are acknowledged on parade and presented with their Gold buzz button certificate.
·         Buzz Buttons are used as currency to access a diverse reward suite that is regularly updated and adjusted based on staff and student feedback. Some rewards are accessed through a registration system for end of term or weekly rewards, some rewards are purchased directly such as ice blocks and the BB Bazaar (shop) and some rewards are purchased directly from class teachers.
·         At the end of each calendar year students will have the opportunity to use their buzz buttons to donate to a nominated charity.
 
 
Responding to unacceptable behaviour
Students come to school to learn. Behaviour support represents an important opportunity for learning how to get along with others. In line with the Code of School Behaviour, when applying behaviour consequences for unacceptable behaviour, the individual circumstances and actions of the student are viewed in conjunction with the needs and rights of school community members. At Blackbutt State School we believe in proactive actions and processes when dealing with unacceptable behaviour, and the use of internal and external suspensions or exclusions are used as a last resort.
