School curriculum
Queensland schools are currently implementing:
the Australian Curriculum for English, Mathematics, Science and History in Prep to Year 10
the Queensland curriculum for the remaining areas of the curriculum in Prep to Year 10
the Queensland
Senior schooling curriculum for Years 11–12.
Australian curriculum
The
Australian Curriculum:
sets out the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for life and work in the 21st century
establishes common standards and high expectations of achievement across the nation.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) develops the Australian Curriculum with input from leading educators in each state. This includes participation and feedback from each schooling sector in Queensland, coordinated by the
Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
Queensland's implementation of the Australian Curriculum applies proven teaching and assessment practices and focuses on improving student achievement. In state schools this is guided by
Every student succeeding — State Schools Strategy 2019-2023 (PDF, 299KB).
Review of the Australian Curriculum
The
Review of the Australian Curriculum — Final Report was published on the Students First website on 10 October 2014.
The Australian Government also released an
initial response to the review report which highlights 5 key themes:
resolving the overcrowded curriculum
improving parental engagement around the curriculum
improving accessibility for all students
rebalancing the curriculum
reviewing ACARA governance.
A process will be put in place for the Australian Government to discuss the 30 review recommendations with all State and Territory Ministers and decide the actions to be taken by ACARA.
Once ACARA has completed the required changes to the Australian Curriculum, each state schooling authority will determine a way forward and advise their schools on implementing changes to the Australian Curriculum.
Expectations regarding the implementation of the Australian Curriculum are described in the
P–12 curriculum, assessment and reporting framework.
Queensland curriculum
The Australian Curriculum will gradually replace the Queensland curriculum.
The
P–12 curriculum, assessment and reporting framework specifies the current requirements for Queensland state schools in delivering the curriculum from Prep to Year 12. The framework is accompanied by a series of policy statements providing further detail.
In implementing the P–12 curriculum, assessment and reporting framework Queensland state schools:
provide students with the required curriculum
assess, monitor and capture student achievement
set high expectations for each student and respond effectively to their current levels of achievement and differing rates of learning
prepare students to exit schooling with the foundation for successful lifelong learning and participation in the community
keep parents and students informed of the student's achievement throughout their schooling.
Curriculum activity risk management
The Curriculum Activity Risk Assessment (CARA) guidelines outline the risk level, qualifications required, and identified hazards of curriculum activities conducted at schools or other locations. Schools are required to complete Curriculum Activity Risk Assessments for curriculum activities to ensure the health and safety of all participants.
As part of our commitment to continually improving processes, schools can now complete CARAs in OneSchool. The
CARA Guidelines for each activity have been revised to complement the new OneSchool CARA process.
